Using a hook remover puts less stress on fish whenever the removal requires a delicate touch, even if they are not hooked deeply.

Another handy item that can fit in your pocket is a nail clipper. They can be purchased very cheaply at discount stores, and replaced when they get too rusty, but are the handiest tool with which to cut lines and trim knots. A pocketknife is also advisable for the rare circumstances where you’ll have to cut something, but remember to wash it off in fresh water when you get home.
If bait fishing is in your plans, then a standard 5-gallon bucket is ideal for carrying everything you need. Stick your bait, rigs, sinkers, sand spikes, and a knife into the bucket to carry out to the beach. Most beaches have enough debris on them to provide a board for cutting purposes, but if that’s not the case, you can add one to the bucket. Cutting V-shaped notches around the edge of the bucket will provide hangers for lures and rigs. Once at your spot, the lid can be replaced to provide a seat, or if you only have a few items, they can be removed and the bucket upended for seating. Finally, the bucket can be used to carry your catch back home.
Only short sand spikes are suitable for carrying in a bucket. If you prefer longer sand spikes, drill a hole toward the top of each and string a long loop through them so they can be carried over your shoulder or attached to the rods you’re carrying.
